Women in Art:
Before we pick up where we left off in the mid-20th century, a little video about why so few women artists have been discussed up to this point (when in fact there were many women making art throughout the eras we have looked at).

Glenn Ligon is an American multi-disciplinary conceptual artist who explores issues of race, sexuality, language, and identity in his artwork. He is most known for his text-based paintings and neons. My favorite is America America (2015), on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. In the video below, Ligon discusses his relationship with the work of another artist, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Mapplethorpe's nudes and homoerotic themes sparked much debate over artistic freedom and censorship in the arts.
